Modeling clay can be used for many crafts and DIY projects but the stuff can get a bit expensive. Especially if you need several colors to complete your project! I knew there had to be a way to make homemade modeling clay because let’s face it you can pretty much make anything you can buy! I plan to make ornaments for Christmas with my boys plus I know they would really just enjoy creating with it. I found a few good recipes online and wanted to share the one that worked best for us.
Homemade Modeling Clay
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- food coloring (optional)
- Mix and stir the ingredients together over low heat.
- Cook the mixture until it has thickened.
- Remove the clay from heat and allow it to cool before using it.
If you need a lot of different colors of modeling clay you could half the recipe and make smaller batches of several colors. That way nothing is wasted.~~ IMPORTANT~~ Do NOT get impatient (like I did with my first batch) and bump up the heat! It will burn! It does take about 10-15 minutes to cook. You do not have to constantly stir though just every few minutes.
I make very small batches of modeling clay colors I know we will not use much of and large batches of white and colors I know will be used for several projects. If you have any old play dough containers you can store your modeling clay in them. You can also use Ziploc bags but make sure you remove as much air as possible to prevent dry out. I have heard some store it in the refrigerator but I do not have space in mine for craft supplies!
